Care/Clinical Governance

It is simplistic to confine care or clinical governance discussion to any number of so-called “pillars” of care/clinical governance. For us, care governance is an extensive subject that covers everything that we do, how we respond to changes in our service users’ care needs and the arrangements we have in place to maintain and improve our service users’ safety and the quality of care that we provide for which everyone in the organisation is accountable. Our Service/Quality Improvement (QI) Masterplan is the overarching document which encapsulates our QI programmes which is available to everyone in the organisation

Some see it as the process by which accountability for the quality of health and social care is monitored and assured. Others believe it is the creation of a culture where the delivery of the highest quality of care and support is understood to be the responsibility of everyone working in the organisation.

What we have in place, for example, our approach, systems, and processes are all concerned with care governance. These arrangements include:

  • Comprehensive systems and processes for quality assurance and audits

  • Quality improvement (QI) programmes for the quality and safety of the services we provide.

  • The systems and processes that assess, monitor, and manage any risks relating to the health, safety and welfare of people using services and others.

  • Completing and maintaining detailed, secure, and accurate service users and staff records and the care activities that we provide.
  • Training and development of a competent workforce
  • Managerial and leadership oversight
In our organisation, care/clinical governance encompasses care management, quality assurance, quality improvement and risk and incident management. We take these matrices seriously and every month, these are discussed in our Care Quality Meetings in the organisation.
